Abstract
While considerable attention has been focused on the formation of soot in the small laminar flames, the more vigorous buoyancy-dominated case is typical of controlled combustion or uncontrolled fires. The soot particle field is responsible for over 80% of the radiated heat transfer. If the soot escapes the flame, there is both energy loss due to incomplete combustion and the release of a pollutant to the surroundings. In this study the morphology of soot formed in buoyancy-dominated diffusion flames using methane, ethene and acetylene has been examined using the thermophoretic sampling technique. This flame is closely related to those examined in radiation studies and, more recently, in numerical-laboratory studies.
