Abstract
An integral analysis of the problem of wind-aided flame spread over combustible solid fuels is performed. Previous theoretical studies of this problem have been completed by Carrier et al and Fernandez-Pello. The solutions of Carrier et al were obtained numerically, after the conservation equations in the gas and solid fuel were reduced to a complicated set of integral equations along the gas-fuel interface; thus, the dependence of the spread rate on the various physical parameters is unclear. Fernandez-Pello derived equations for predicting upward spread rates under the assumption of a quasi-steady state in the gas. The objective of the modeling approach used here is to improve the physical understanding of the transient spreading mechanism by extending the analytical treatment as far as possible.
