- Abstract
- Reported fiscal year 1973 studies of fires and explosions seek to develop capabilities during mining operations to detect and quench ignitions of gas in the face area, to detect and quench by means of passive or triggered barriers explosions propagating in rock-dusted coal dust, and to detect incipient fires early enough for easy extinguishment. Research discussed includes minimum air velocities to lift coal or dock dusts, surveys to determine adequacy of rock dusting, chemical agents to quench gas or coal dust explosions and their relative efficacies, spectra radiated by explosions, and nozzle sprays of extinguishants.
