- Abstract
- Helium has been used to trace the movement of gases in oilfields and gasfields, but it was used for the first time to trace gases from a burning section of a coal mine in 1967 at the CedarAvenue mine fire in Scranton, PA. Because carbon monoxide had been detected in several residences and some business establishments, it was desirable to trace the toxic gas to its source. There were two beds of coal on fire at Cedar Avenue, the New County and the Clark.
