- Abstract
- This is the first number in a new series of publications to be issued by the Division of building Research, National Research Council. When a fire occurs in a building, at an early stage it is generally confied to a single compartment. A major disaster can therefore be avoided if the walls, floor, and other elements of this compartment are so designed as to prevent the fire from spreading to other compartments. The property of a construction that directly relates to its ability to restrain a fire within a compartment is called its fire endurance; it is measued in hours.
