- Abstract
- In the early 1970's, the Naval Sea Systems Command in conjunction with the National Bureau of Standards developed a systems approach to fire testing for shipboard use. The promise of the approach is that no single test is adequate to characterize the fire behavior of a material or materials system. This approach uses a series of small scale tests, intermediate scale testing and full scale verification. It provides for the testing of material systems in their end use configuration, since the testing of separate material components, does not always predict systems fire behavior. The evaluation of GRP pipe for shipboard use was discussed as an illustrative example of this approach to fire testing.
