- Abstract
- In 2005, an estimated 20,900 reported U.S. non-confined home structure fires involving electrical distribution or lighting equipment resulted in 500 civilian deaths, 1,100 civilian injuries, and $862 million in direct property damage. Lamps, light fixtures, and light bulbs accounted for the largest share of 2002-2005 non-confined home structure fires involving electrical distribution or lighting equipment, while cords and plugs accounted for the largest share of home structure fire civilian deaths. These estimates are based on data from the U.S. Fire Administration's (USFA's) National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA's) annual fire department experience survey.
