- Abstract
- Horizontal jet flames under normal gravity occur in fires resulting from oil and gas well accidents and in furnaces that utilize horizontal burners for a low elevation design. These flames turn progressively away from the injector axis due to the action of buoyancy until a predominantly vertical flow is established. In addition to the global effort on the flame trajectory, buoyancy produces local turbulent velocities due to temperature gradients and fluctuations. The upper half of a horizontal flame has an unstable density gradient resulting in lofting of plume-like structures. These characteristics change the mixing behavior of horizontal flames from that of corresponding vertical flames. The overall objectives of the present study are to understand the effects of buoyancy induced mixing on flame structure and radiation properties. In the following measurements of trajectories and velocity distributions in horizontal jet flames are described together with the results of a simplified numerical analysis.
