- During the past few years there have been a number of serious fires onboard mass transit vehicles. These events highlight the endemic problem of insuring fire safety on mass transit vehicles. Typical problem areas concern: a general lack of supervisory personnel trained to respond to fire emergencies, difficulties in the rapid evacuation of large numbers of passengers, and the lack of fire compartmentation or the compensating fire protection of automatic fire detection and extinguishment devices. Due to these shortcomings, the level of fire safety for many transit systems is particularly dependent upon the materials used in their construction.
