- Abstract
- The NBS corridor fire program is a continuing program to investigate the growth and spread of fire and smoke through a corridor when fire is initiated in an adjoining room. The program is designed to study the effect of geometrical configuration, combustible loading, surface linings, ventilation, and other design parameters on the spread of fire and smoke through corridors in multiple occupancy buildings. The first objective of the program is to identify and quantify the real fire hazards in a corridor, as a basis for evaluating the many small scale flammability tests for building materials. The second objective is to develop physically meaningful fire safety criteria for controlling combustible materials to be used in a corridor. These criteria would be based on the flammability and thermophysical proeprties of wall, cieling and floor linings, properly weighted to allow for their relative locations for the given design parameters.
