Abstract
In this report estimates of the number of accidental deaths involving various environmental factors are presented. Although these estimates are for the deaths associated with a factor, they do not imply causation. In many accidental deaths there may be a combination of factors that result in death; thus, one factor alone cannot be referred to as the cause. Categories are those listed in the External Cause Code of the 8th revision of the International Classification of Diseases for Use in the United States (ICD). Subcategories are those given in the special studies used or those designating the place of accident as in the 7th revision of the International Classification of Diseases, or both. In developing the estimates, it was noted that the environmental factors relating to many types of accidental deaths were unknown. Estimates for these factors will be added as our knowledge of them increases.
