- The tables in this publication are a compilation of wildfire statistics covering Calendar Year 1971 as reported to the UnitedStates Forest Service by its field offices, the State Forester or comparable State Official, of each of the 50 States, the Department of the Interior, and the Tennesse Valley Authority. The statistics obtained are for forest land and nonforested watershed lands in Federal ownership, and for State and privately-owned lands which are included in the Cooperative Forest Fire Control Program as authorized by Section 2 of the Clarke-McNary Act of 1924. Statistical data is shown separately for each individual State, and totals are also given for certain geographical groups of States. These statistics are the most reliable information which the protection agencies were able to obtain. As no field organizations are available in unprotected areas to report fires, the statistics shown for such areas are merely the best estimates available.
