- Abstract
- Welcome to the National Bureau of Standards--America's Laboratory. NBS has been solving problems since its founding in 1901, and today is no exception. Whether it be in air pollution, lunar ranging, energy conservation, flammable fabrics, or computer privacy, NBS scientists are making major contributions. These contributions stem from the Bureau's broad interest and expertise in measurement science, for it is measurement that provides the foundation for today's science, technology, and commerce. If two words can be used to characterize an organization as large as NBS, they would have to be competence and versatility. Of the staff's competence there is no question. Many hold degrees from the nations--indeed the world's--great universities, and their work is well regarded by the scientific community. An important element in this excellence is the high-quality support staff also available at NBS. As for versatility, there are projects in such diverse areas as metallurgy, laser length standards, dental materials, computer networking, toy safety, building research, electronics, clinical standards, applied mathematics, and hundreds of other areas. Not every NBS lab is open today--there are just too many. We have opened areas that are broadly representative of all our work. Visit as many as you can, ask questions, and I hope you take home a better understanding of NBS, its people, programs, and impact upon your everyday life.
