Abstract
The standard North American flame spread tests of building materials are those set forth in ASTM Methods E 84, the standard tunnel test; E 162, the radiant panel test; and E 286, the 8-foot tunnel test. These tests require expensive and complex equipment and techniques of calibration, and through the years efforts have been made to devise simple, inexpensive equipment that would give results comparable to those obtained with the three major methods.
