Abstract
In response to a request from the Naval Air Systems Command (AIR 531B) an administrative toxicological review of potential occupational health hazards associated with utilization of carbon composite materials was performed in October 1984 by the Naval Environmental Health Center, Norfolk, VA. This review addresses potential exposures of firefighters, rescue personnel, mishap investigators, cleanup personnel, and manufacture maintenance/repair workers to a number of substances and chemical agents associated with composite materials. This includes: (1) airborne carbon fibers of respirable size; (2) decomposition products from burning composite materials; (3) condensation products (following a fire) which could contaminate the aircraft, personnel and adjacent surfaces; (4) skin contact with carbon fibers/debris; (5) carbon/epoxy dusts generated during manufacture/maintenance repair operations, and (6) potentially toxic solvents/epoxy systems utilized in the manufacture/maintenance/repair of composite materials.
