Abstract
The objective of the Instrument Society of America (ISA) is to advance the theory, design, manufacture and use of instruments and controls in science and industry. One of the departments of this national society is the Standards and Practices Department of which there are many committees. One committee, known as RP12, is responsible for "Safety for Electrical Instrumentation in Hazardous Areas" and has appointment a subcommittee (RP12A) to handle liasion with writers of the National Electric Code. Another subcommittee (RP12B) is responsible for "Safety for Electrical Instrumentation in Dusty Hazardous Areas." A review board reviews proposals for the improvement of electrical safety practices. The stated purpose of the parent committee is "to promote uniform, safe and economical instrumentation for hazardous areas." This purpose is adopted by the dust subcommittee with the insertion of the word "dusty" in the statement.
