- Abstract
- Research on dust explosions has been in progress intermittently for 100 years and continuously for more than 50, but accurate quantitative prediction of explosion behavior--predicting flame temperatures, speeds, combustion limits, pressures, etc.--is still not possible. This is not so much a consequence of failure of research as of inadequate and/or limited-objective research. Initial assessment of the problem underestimated its magnitude and, in addition, much of the research effort was inevitably directed, for reasons of urgency, towards ad hoc studies of prevention and suppression.
