Abstract
As part of an ongoing research project assisting the Dept. of the Interior, Minerals Management Services's efforts to insure safe and effective offshore gas and oil exploration, feasibility studies of the efficacy of using water sprays to control and extinguish blowout fires have been performed at small and large scale. Here, we present some intermediate scale (7MW heat release rate and 7m flame height) measurements of gas temperatures and incident radiative fluxes to nearby targets from methane jet diffusion flames simulating an unobstructed gas well blowout.
