Abstract
This discussion deals only with the human interface with composite materials. Recent mishaps involving aircraft constructed with composite materials have caused concern to the U.S. Navy relative to short and/or long term threats to the respiratory, dermatologic, and opthalmologic health of any persons exposed to the pyrolysis products of composites at the scene of a mishap. A single unprotected exposure to toxic gases and composite fibers released as a result of fire or explosion may, in some situations, affect health. However, this is also true of combustion products from other sources. Education and information to supress rumors and related panic which might cause inappropriate action/behavior by uniformed persons at a mishap site is recommended. Current evidence indicates that no immediate changes to NATOPS are necessary. If information which would support a NATOPS change becomes available, appropriate NATOPS changes would then be made. Basic firefighting principles should provide adequate protection in mishaps involving composites. Respiratory, eye, and skin protection for mishap clean-up and investigation personnel should be provided and properly utilized.
