Abstract
The Center for Fire Research at the National Bureau of Standards carries out its work in support of the National goal of reducing fire losses by half by the end of this century. The Center conducts fundamental studies and applies the results to specific problems. The ultimate products are new test methods, proposed standards and code changes, new concepts and recommended practices. The work is guided by a concept of intervention in unwanted fires in a sequence of four strategies: reduction of ignitions, control of fire spread and growth, improved detection and automatic suppression, and improved design for protection of exposed people and property. The program elements are selected to deal with the most frequent and damaging fires which have been described systematically as a series of fire scenarios.
