- Abstract
- In the 1989 Report on the Health Consequences of Smoking, the Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service, in evaluating the health effects of smoking, concluded that "smoking is responsible for more than one of every six deaths in the United States". Cigarette smoking alone increases the risk for coronary heart disease from 23/1000 to 54/1000, together with hypercholesterolemia cigarette smoking raises the risk to 103/1000, and together with high blood pressure, to 92/1000. All three risk factors, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, and high blood pressure, synergistically increase thr risk for coronary heart disease to 189/1000.
