- A review of the current shipboard and shorebased aircraft firefighting tactics and procedures regarding composite materials as provided in the U.S. Navy Aircraft Firefighting and Rescue NATOPS Manual were presented. Due to a lack of supporting data, the products of combustion of these materials were not assessed as a greater hazard than the existing aircraft materials. A continuation of research to determine specific burning characteristics as well as potential fire extinguishment criteria would be beneficial to the fire service. It was concluded that no immediate change to the firefighting NATOPS manual was necessary, but a message reiterating the specific safety procedures should be released.
