- Abstract
- Ingalls Shipbuilding, a division of Litton Systems, Inc., under its IRAD program, has a specific task related to searching out composite materials for shipboard applications. For eighteen months the author was working in several areas. They were: Structural Watertight Doors, Ballistic Watertight Doors, Stack Fairings and Ship's Masts. The composite material program covers fabrication, testing, and evaluation of structural and composite ship's doors, ballistic and non-ballistic. The major reason for starting with the doors was that they are a rather simple item to manufacture and there are many on a ship, so multiple buys would reduce costs and weight. All materials used in the doors panels were specified to meet the minimum requirements of the habitability standard, MIL-STD-1623B for flame, smoke, oxygen index, and toxicity. Requirements to meet this specification included the investigation and testing of several resin systems.
