Abstract
Further experiments with the shelter fire experimental facility have been conducted. Operated by IITRI for the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency, the facility exposes an instrumented basement shelter to verhead debris fires representative of various building occupancies and degrees of blast damage. During 1972, the facility has been used to characterize debris fires from several additional occupancies, to determine the effects of nonuniform debris distribution on conductive heating of the shelter slab and to examine the influence of mode and time of application on the effectiveness of a water countermeasure. Blast driven debris trajectories, calculated in another program, were applied to a postulated pattern of structures to describe debris at and near the shelter. One selected description was constructed and burned as the final experiment of the reporting period. Uses of the shelter to study the behavior of occupants in a fire environment were defined and methodology was developed for activities to evaluate shelteree response and to develop methods to improve their behavior.
