- Abstract
- Knowledge is useless unless it is organized into a form so that others may understand and learn. In many fields the development of textbooks is a common practice and new ones tend to add clarity and variety rather than to add substantially new information. In contrast, the field of fire safety has suffered from a lack of available scientific information organized to pursue its tasks. Instead it has relied on experience and empirical practices. the reasons for this situation are the comples nature of fire problems; its reliance on the maturation of other disciplines--namely, fluid mechanics and combustion; and the lack of sustained research in fire.
