- Abstract
- Flammability testing for the screening of materials to be used in the European Space Agency (ESA) spacecraft and associated equipment is detailed. Materials shall be classified as Group I (they have a critical oxygen index value higher than the worst case atmosphere +10 percent when tested for flammability in accordance with the Critical Oxygen Index Test) or Group II (materials that do not meet the Group I flammability requirements). Usage of Group II materials is subject to specific approval by the relevant Project Office and, if further safety considerations are required, the materials be further tested by using either or both the Downward Propagation Test and the Determination of Flash and Fire Point.
