Abstract
A series of experiments has been carried out to investigate smoke production from materials burning under conditions approximating to those encountered in "real fires". This has involved a small scale "room-corridor" assembly, allowing the smoke to accumulate in a large chamber (250 m(3)) and measuring its optical density. Three fuels have been studied (wood, polymethylmethacrylate and polypropylene) uner different ventilation conditions and with different "corridor" lengths. The results are compared with standard test data and with smoke yields under free burning conditions. In those experiments involving a "corridor" it was possible to compare the results directly with the yield of smoke calculated from continuous measurement of the opacity of the plume of fire products discharged from the end of the "corridor".
