Abstract
HAZARD I: Qualitative Assessment [1] Production of the Model: HAZARD I has been produced at the Center for Fire Research of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (formerly NBS), Gaithersburg, U. S. A. The version considered here is the one which was available at the time of the commencement of this project. It is now often referred to as the 'Veta Version'. A second version of HAZARD I, known as HAZARD I V1.0 (i.e. version 1.0) was released comercially during the latter part of 1989. The commercial version is often referred to simply as 'HAZARD I'. There are significant differences between the 'Beta Version' and the 'Commercial Version' of HAZARD I. This needs to be borne in mind and the commercial version considered at a later date. Further versions (i.e. HAZARD II and HAZARD III) are also intended. 1.1 Unless otherwise stated, the implied reference in this report is reference (3) which provides the main documentation for the beta version of HAZARD I. 1.2 Different Versions of FAST (A Sub-model of HAZARD I). The beta version of HAZARD I contains FAST Version 17 whereas the commercial version contains FAST Version 18. [2] Availability of ASKFRS: The commercial version of HAZARD I is in the public domain in the U. S. A. and is available from the Center for Fire Research at a cost of $225 U. S. dollars (November 1989). Presumably the beta version (the subject of this report) is also available, in principle. However, the beta version would not be expected to be employed by a commercial user in a 'real world' application. [3] State of Development and Support: As already mentioned in Section 1, the HAZARD package is still undergoing development and later versions are expected. The package is supported by the Center for Fire Research from where a user would presumably be able to get help. [4] Overall Model Type: In its entirety, HAZARD I is a zone model which calculates the number of fatalities in a residential fire. It is a menu-based package which consists, essentially, of two sub-models FAST and EXITT, which may be run independently of each other. FAST is an acronym for Fire and Smoke Transport and that program deals with transfer of heat and smoke; EXITT is a model for occupants' behavior. Outputs from FAST and EXITT may be fed into a thrid model, TENAB, which computes the number of fatalities as well as incapacitated or escaped people.
