The Institute consists of 12 technical divisions and has more than 2600 employees, who perform contract work for industry and government clients. The Institute celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1997. The SwRI Department of Fire Technology has more than 45 years of experience in the area of fire research and testing. Fire Technology was one of the first departments created by the Institute. Currently it is part of the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Division. Dr. Marc Janssens joined SwRI in May of 1996. Prior to his move to San Antonio, he was manager of fire technology for a wood industry trade association in the Washington, DC area. Part of this period of almost ten years he also worked at NIST, initially as a Research Associate and subsequently as a Guest Worker for the wood industry.
