Abstract
This examination of the safety aspects which must be examined for the Channel Tunnel is by Derek Howarth, deputy chief fire officer of West Yorkshire Fire Brigade. He was officer-in-charge of the fire in the Summitt Tunnel in December 1984 and since that time has spoken to many audiences throughout the UK about the fire and also involved himself in research into incidents in tunnels. He is a CACFOA representative on an ad-hoc working part set up under the CFBAC Ops Committee to look at 'Incidents in Tunnels' the outcome of which will be updated guidance to the fire service. Although set up some time ago this committee has not yet formally met!
