Abstract
Organic matrix composite materials burn when exposed to fire. Composite fire protection raises several issues, including effect of the flammability of composites on the overall fire threat to the ship; methods of protecting these materials from fire without presenting significant obstacles to their use; and identification of changes that will be necessary in firefighting tactics for hsips having composite structures. The fire performance requirements for deckhouse structures must be identified. Secondly, the fire characteristics of the materials themselves must be identified. Then the amount of protection (active and pasive) that will be required to make composites viable alternatives to conventional materials can be evaluated.
