- *[ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH/Summary in English p. 195-201]* The purpose of this dissertation is to shed light on the offence of arson. The relevant works on the subject have mainly been concerned with fire technology aspects or with psychiatric (or psychological) aspects. A criminological approach is used in the present work. It is an analysis of Swedish material drawn,on the one hand, from the official statistics of crime and, on the other, from insurance company statistics, and also from samples of existing registers. The findings: arson is more widespread than has been expected. There may be a considerable dark factor, incidents are tending to increase in number, arsonists are generally children and yound people and, where the number of incidents is concerned, vandalism is the predominant motive. The frequency increases with population density. It is greatest in Stockholm in the districts considered to have most problems. The volume of losses is determined by a limited number of major losses.
