Abstract
Fire resistant coating compositions which are flake, crack, craze, and abrasion resistant when dried, and of greatly reduced leachability, comprise a combination of potassium silicate solution. This solution has a silicon dioxide to potassium oxids ratio of about 4.8 to 5.3, a ceric oxide and an aklyl trialkoxy silane as rehydration suppressants, and woolastonite as a film builder (any of these may be combined with selected conventional pigments and fillers). This method relates to coating compositions, and in particular to combinations of inorganic materials for compositions which are both fireproof and insoluble in water after application. This method specifically defines a unique combination of potassium silicate with other materials to produce a superior coating.
