- Abstract
- Mr. Tovey pointed out, based on ana analysis of accidents in the FFacts' data file to November 1973 for fiber composition, burn time (ease of ignition + rate of flame spread), and garment configuration, that the shape of the garment has a greater effect on the total area of the body burned than either fiber composition or burn time. The speaker related this study, only a portion of which was discussed here, to the difficulties encountered in the papers by Schmitt and Buchbinder (presented at this meeting and summarized on pgs. 22,24) in which it was attempted to find some correlation between burn injuries and socio-economic background, and the reactions of individuals to clothing ignition. Therefore, he said, the objective was to determine what makes apparel a hazard, and what can be altered to change the sequences of the fire chain of events, as a function of the extent of the burn injury.
