Abstract
[ABSTRACT IN ENGLIGH] Higher requirements relating to aesthetics, comfort and representation have secured that planning and design of new buildings are made in form of atria. This applies to the new building sector as well as to the refurbishment of existing buildings or building complexes. Atria are frequented by many people. When working on fire protection concepts, this fact has to be taken into consideration. Since fire protection concepts for buildings being visited to a high degree have to consider the aspect of personal protection and smoke control, smoke measures as part fire protection concepts are of high importance. Due to the new style of atria, smoke control concepts for this type of building could not be determined in laws, norms or rules and regulations (such as VDS/DIN). This type of construction which is totally different from industrial buildings and consequently, the different proceedings during a fire, prohibit the application of rules/regulations that have been experienced in industrial constructions. Such fire protection concepts, cannot always be hidden optically. An added difficulty to the fact that one cannot always have recourse to the generally established rules of technique, are the architectonical aspects. Based on a physical analysis of the anticipated fire, solutions can, however, be worked upon which not only consider the interests of fire protection, but also take care of architectional aspects. Under certain circumstances totally new kinds of solution in connection with new fire protection products might be necessary. In case of a well-timed and constructive co-operation between fire authorities, architects and planners for fire protection systems, it is in most cases, possible to come to a solution which is satisfactory to all parties involved.
