Abstract
The proposed new member of the Koppers family of thermally-stable, electrical-grade resins is one which combines fire-retardance with the outstanding thermal resistance exhibited by the 7000 and 7001 resins. Indications are that a product of this type would be a significant contribution to the electrical industry. Three base resins have been evaluated by the thermal endurance testing of their filled, glass-mat laminates. Flexural strength--both at ambient temperature and at 180 deg. C--dielectric strength, and LP 406 rating were used as the representative properties. All three resins exhibited what can be considered, by the performance of current commercial materials, very good stability during prolonged aging at 220 deg. C. There were significant differences among the resins, and these are discussed. The influence of fire-retardant additives on retention of mechanical and electrical properties was found to be very significant. A combination of antimony oxide and alumina hydrate gave the best overall performance.
