- Abstract
- There is not doubt that the continuing economic growth of the textile industry is strongly dependent on technological innovation, both in product design and in process engineering. Research and development naturally play a key role, since technological innovation clearly cannot take place without technological feasibility. On the other hand, it is becoming widely recognized that the innovative process is also influenced by market forces, financial considerations, societal needs, environmental constraints, national and international politics, and other factors, all of which must be appropriately integrated with the necessary scientific and engineering knowledge. There are numerous important issues that confront the textile industry, particularly with regard to technological innovation in our complex society, and the TRI research program, described on the following pages continues to respond to these issues.
