Abstract
The original Flammable Fabrics Act was enacted in 1953 as a results of fires involving the notorious "torch sweaters" and play suits which caused burn deaths and injuries to several persons. The Act was effectived, in that it kept garments made of extremely flammable materials off the market. Although many lives have been saved and much suffering prevented by that law, it has not been enough. It is estimated that several thousand lives are lost each year as a result of the ignition of common wearing apparel and interior furnishings. The Congress, concerned over the possibility of unreasonable risk to the public, amended and revised the Act of 19532 by enacting Public Law 90-189. By coincidence, President Johnson signed it into law December 14, 1967, the date of the First Annual Meeting of the information Council on Fabric Flammability.
