- Abstract
- As coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) matures as a diagnostic tool, it is being applied in ever more difficult experimental situations. Many of these applied systems are turbulent and contain copious amounts of soot or smoke. These include high-pressure flames and furnaces, and internal combustion engines such as diesels. Eckbreth found that the pulsed laser radiation used in Raman and CARS experiments could rapidly produce C(2) by evaporation of soot particles. While interferences were noticed in these and later experiments, it was generally found that simple changes to the experimental design could be used to either eliminate or minimize the effect of the interferences.
