Abstract
The aim of this checklist is to promote safe, reliable operation of domestic solid fuel heating systems. Just as a car is checked for soundness of tyres, brakes, lights etc., a solid fuel heating system can also be checked by a homeowner who can then, if necessary, seek further advice from an installer, chimney sweep, insurer or the local authority. Because builders and subcontractors carrying out repair or alteration work are often able to observe how a solid fuel stove has been installed, or may even be involved in re-siting such a stove, they are in a position to check any safety factors that may have been neglected in the original installation, and the condition of the stove and its various parts. Modification of the installed system should not be attempted wihout the consent of the local authority and such modification can include applying surface finishes to elements of the installation.
