- Abstract
- A great deal of progress has been made in understanding the basic physics and chemistry of fire and the toxicological effects of fire gases. An interdisciplinary approach to fire safety requires that such studies in basic science be accompanied by equally well-conceived studies in applied science and engineering. The objective is not to justify what has been done in basic science, because the need for fundamental understanding in any technical field is inherently justified. The objective of applied science and engineering is to find practical and effective solutions to problems.
