- Abstract
- In the United States and in the United Kingdom it is well documented that approximately 80% of the fire fatalities are due to smoke inhalation. Furthermore, in the United States it is estimated that 250,000 civilians and 65,000 firefighters are injured annually in fires. The magnitude and type of inhalation injury in the civilian and firefighter populations have been poorly documented and probably represent the most inadequately defined human element of accidental fires. Lacking basic information, effective methods of treatment for inhalation victims is at best controversial.
