Metropolitan fire and Emergency Service Board (MFESB)
Abstract
The Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Service Board (MFESB) is constituted under the Metropolitan fire Brigades Act 1958. The organisation's name and role changed along with its Board and management structure following amendments to the Act in 1997. The Brigade's role of protecting life and property from fire in the Metropolitan Fire District was broadened to deal with a greater range of emergencies and to encompass more aspects of community safety and emergency prevention activities. The MFESB has 1,479 professional firefighters manning 46 strategically located fire stations around the metropolitan area and other operational departments. There are also 250 technical and administrative employees supporting the protection of property valued at close to $200 billion, vital community infrastructure and, during daylight hours, around three million people. The Board is accountable to the Minister for Police and Emergency Services.
