- Abstract
- In the past three years the U.S. has made significant progress toward a Performance-Based Code system that would parallel the traditional, prescriptive code. The International Codes Council (ICC) is near final release of a performance code that combines the building and fire code into a single document that would provide "cradle-to-grave" regulation of performance designs as well as providing a means to address economically, deficiencies in existing buildings. The National Fire Protection Association has adopted a performance-based design option in the Life Safety Code that includes a somewhat controversial set of design fire scenarios, and the National Fire Alarm Code has a new performance approach for fire warning systems for dwellings. The NFPA's Telecommunications Facilities committee is developing a performance approach and the SFPE's Performance-Based Design Guide is being printed. These documents incorporate numerous approaches to performance issues that differ substantially with traditional codes and standards, and regulatory techniques. This seminar will provide an update and will discuss the unique aspects of the newly emerging performance documents.
