- Abstract
- It is a pleasure to be at a conference on fire safety for buildings sponsored by NSF, GSA, HUD, and NBS. With four such sponsors, it is hard to imaging anything going wrong or becoming inoperative. But, seriously, I do feel that it is most appropriate and significant that two agencies, whose primary concern is with knowledge generation in the fire area (NSF and NBS), are cooperating closely with two users, or knowledge-applying agencies (GSA and HUD), in joint conference. It is also significant that a number of researchers are subjecting their results to discussions and summaries during which the appliers have a chance to ask tough questions. I hope this format proves to be stimulating since dialogues between generators or researchers and appliers or practitioners are all too rare.
