Abstract
Many things that have occurred recently or are underway right now are going to have a profound effect on fire protection and the fire protection engineer. Just to mention two, there are OSHA and the National Commission on Fire Prevention and Control. To some extent, these two will most liekly have opposite, hopefully unequal, effects on the future of the fire protection engineer; this will be discussed in more detail because it is directly related to the main challenge facing the fire protection engineer. There is probably more research, both basic and applied, underway in the fire protection field now than ever before and this, too, will have a large influence on the future of fire protection engineering. In the preparation of this paper, consideration was first given to specific problems facing the fire protection engineer; for example, high rise buildings, rack storage, nursing homes, etc. However, these are problems which can be solved through application of fire protection engineering principles.
