Abstract
It is a matter of enlightened self-interest for industry to contribute resources and time to the solution of public health and safety problems. The objective is not simply a desire to be seen as doers of good works. The best result for indutry, and for all of us, is to see major problems actually solved. The Plastics industry and makers of related polymeric products have a remarkable record of contribution to the world's economic, social, safety and health goals. These contributions could be jeopardized by public misunderstandings on fire issues and by simplistic pressures for responses which do not fit the problems. The question of toxic fumes in fire is particularly subject to such pressures and misunderstandings.
