Abstract
This paper describes the design and operation of PCA's floor furnace used primarily for fire tests of 14 x 18-ft floor or roof specimens. Beams or slabs spanning either 14 or 18 ft but narrower than the furnace opening can be tested by covering the remaining lateral space with refractory slabs. Many unique features are incorporated in the furnace including a restraining system that permits measurement and control of the specimen's expansion during fire tests. Control devices and safety features of the equipment are described.
