Abstract
This talk addresses the past, present, and future of the U. S. fire problem and the techniques used to measure it. About half the presentation will address the current size (through 1984), recent trends, and major components of the U. S. fire problem. Included in this section will be some discussion of where the fire problem seems to be headed. The other half of the presentation will discuss statistical and statistics-based methods applied to the fire problem, from the earliest national loss statistics in the 19th century to the integrated-modelling packages of the future.
