Abstract
In order better to understand the effect of a fuel-spill fire on nuclear weapons, a model for determining the duration of such a fire was developed. The model, whose focus is not duration of the whole fire, but duration at a point perhaps somewhat removed from the spill location (the situation which obtains when fuel is spilling from a fuel tank and nuclear weapons are stored somewhat nearby), derives duration as a function of several parameters relevant to the fuel spill. These include the size of the hole from which the fuel is spilling, the separation of the spill point and the point of interest (here, the weapons storage area), the amount of fuel available, and the form of the fuel tank from which the fuel is spilling (which affects the hydrostatic head, and therefore the rate of fuel spill). The model pertains to any fuel- and weapon-laden system.
